Facebooking

Dear........,

When I first started using Facebook about 11 years ago, I was the only member of my family on the platform. Today, in our joint family of 12—comprising my father, mother, brothers, sisters-in-law, and children—nine of us have Facebook accounts. We're all well-connected, regularly seeing and engaging with each other’s posts.

I believe this experience is not unique to my family. Across Bangladesh—and indeed, around the world—Facebook has become a powerful tool for maintaining connections. It extends far beyond family: through Facebook, we stay in touch with elders, relatives, teachers, students, friends, neighbors, and countless people we've never even met.

I know of one such person—someone I've never seen in real life—yet I’ve been following him for years, inspired by just one thoughtful post. To me, Facebook often serves as a mirror of the mind.

That’s why I humbly request everyone: when you use Facebook, please consider using respectful and thoughtful language. Words matter.

I understand that during this challenging time of the coronavirus crisis, many are facing profound losses—some of which may never be fully recovered. Even so, it’s important that we move forward with calmness, compassion, and clarity.

Thank you.
